What is Anxiety

Anxiety and what is it ? 

They say 1 in 5 people in Ireland suffer or have suffered with Anxiety. If you haven’t heard or experienced anxiety, count yourself lucky.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is the mind and body’s reaction to a dangerous, unfamiliar or stressful situations (each persons level of stress is different) . It’s is sense of uneasiness, distress, or dread you feel before a significant event. For some people a low level of anxiety can keep them alert and aware of what is going on around them, but for those suffering from an anxiety disorder, it feels far from normal, sometimes the smallest tasks can feel huge.

 Anxiety disorders are thought to be caused by a combination of factors. It’s likely genetic, psychological and environmental factors come together to cause anxiety disorders. Environmental factors:

 Elements in the environment around an individual can increase anxiety. Stress from a personal relationship, job, school, or money can contribute greatly to anxiety disorder

How Do I Know I Have Anxiety

Excessive Worrying

Feeling Agitated


Tense Muscles


Difficulty Concentrating

Trouble Falling or Staying Asleep

Avoiding Social Situations

What can cause Anxiety?

  • Genetics: People who have family members with an anxiety disorder are more than likely to have one as well.
  • Environmental factors: Elements in the environment around an individual can increase anxiety. Stress from i.e personal relationship, job, school, or money can be a massive part to why people suffer with anxiety.
  • Brain chemistry: Stress, a traumatic experiences and genetic factors can effect the brain to react more quickly to triggers that would not previously have caused anxiety
  • Medical factors: some medical conditions can lead to an anxiety disorder. Side effects of medication can cause anxiety


Anxiety as I get older?

Not to alarm people but there is a possibility for anxiety to increase or to develope as you get older. This is because as we get older our worry’s in life become a bigger. Ie. stresses of health problems, losses, money and other major life changes.

If you look after your mind your mind will look after you.

You need to take time out of your day for you, go on a walk, read a book, take a class you have always wanted to. You will be surprised how your mind can shift if you just make a shift in your lifestyle.
